Why is it important to assess our pupils?

Assessment is a key component of learning because it will help our students to learn. When students are able to see how they are doing in a class, they are able to determine whether or not they understand the lessons. Assessment can also help motivate students. Not just with students, assessment can also help our teachers.

Assessment can provide insight into students‘ true comprehension and can help to identify gaps in students‘ knowledge. Teachers should always encourage students to examine their own learning and levels of understanding. It can also be an important ‘wake-up call’ to teachers to identify areas that require improvement to their learners.

When students are collaborators in assessment, they develop the habit of self-reflection. They learn the qualities of good work, how to judge their work against these qualities, how to step back from their work to assess their own efforts and feelings of accomplishment, and how to set personal goals in life.

A major reason for using assessment is for its role in student skill development, in improving learning and in helping students to improve their performance on assessed work. Additionally, it has a place as a means of summative assessment. That’s why it is very important to give Summative tests every Quarter.
